Kayden Jackson can't believe he has gone from a nowhere man to a terrace favourite as he looks to send Stanley into League One.
The Reds have a break this weekend due to international call-ups at Yeovil which has given the 23-year-old time to reflect on the season so far.
Jackson, who signed from Barnsley for an undisclosed fee in August, admits in the summer life was tough as he struggled to find a club but, eight months down the line, his 14 goals and numerous assists means he even has his own song.
“I think it was against Crewe when I first heard it,” said striker Jackson. “I couldn't quite believe it. I have gone from scratching around for a club in the summer, not knowing where I would be playing and wondering if it was another season in Barnsley's Under 23s, to having my name sung by the fans on the terraces.
“The fact the fans have taken to me, and I have a song, makes every goal extra special especially ones like Saturday where I can score in front of them.
“It makes me even more determined to help Accrington into the highest league since they reformed in 1968.”
Jackson chipped his 14th goal of the season over the Forest Green goalkeeper in Stanley's 3-1 win on Saturday which sent them three points clear at the top.“If someone had said at the start of the season that I would have 14 goals by mid-March, I would have snapped their hands off. To be honest, I don't care if I don't score again but provide plenty of assists, as long as it means we win the league.
“It's about the team and it's been a great season. We did have a dip in December and we aren't taking anything for granted as we know, with nine games to go, anything can still happen.
“I think Luton were about 14 points ahead of us at one point and we know things can change - and the gaffer and the experienced lads in the dressing room will keep us aware of this.
“Even when Luton were flying I said to my family I believed we could catch them and I really did. But there are still 27 points to play for and we have got to be mindful that we could have a dip. We have the good momentum at the moment and we don't want to let it slip but we know the job is not done.”
Stanley have a training game tomorrow, will be in Friday but Saturday will be a day for watching other results.
“It will be weird to have this weekend off when most other teams are playing but I personally have been carrying a few knocks, I didn't train much last week, so it gives me time to put my feet up and let my body heal – while hopefully results go our way!”
And what would it mean to win promotion?
“It would mean everything, it would be massive. I will have never experienced anything like it in my career and we are so close to the finishing line now. We want to make sure it happens.”
