Coley's League One ambitions

28 June 2018

John Coleman is on the hunt for three more players as his squad returned to pre-season training today.

Coleman has added defender Will Wood, winger Piero Mingoia and midfielder Sam Finley to his squad with most of the players who were crowned League Two champions last season signed up to new deals.

The Reds boss is aware some clubs may be casting admiring glances at his players - with the transfer deadline on Thursday August 9th - but he is just looking at boosting his squad.

"If you are successful you expect other clubs to want to sign your players, we know that," said Coleman.

"But as we have said all along, if there are realistic bids we will consider them but we will do our best for the club.

"Last year we spoke of our determination to be successful and our realistic aim was automatic promotion which we achieved and we want to make this season even better.

"Accrington Stanley are known as 'The Club That Wouldn't Die' but I want us to be more than that. It's not very admirable if the height of your ambition is surviving.

"I want us to be a club that lives and thrives and goes on to prosper, we don't just want to compete."

Coleman was pleased with the first day run-out and now knows it's all about looking forward to life in SkyBet League One.

"It was good to get the lads back in, some were more enthusiastic than others, but we can't bask in the glory of last year, that's done now, we have to move on and make this season even more special.

"We have to be even better than last year. Before we started training today, off the top of our heads we named 12 teams in League One who Accrington have beaten in the past so at some point Accrington were better than all those teams and we have to take that into this season."
