Stanley 3 Huddersfield 0

14 July 2018

Kayden Jackson kicked off the pre-season with a first half double and Sean McConville chipped in with a late free kick as Stanley celebrated a 3-0 victory over Premier League Huddersfield Town.

It was third time lucky for John Coleman's men who were well-beaten in a behind-closed-doors friendly against the Terriers two years ago and lost 1-0 last season after Town's promotion to the top flight.

Highly-rated striker Jackson took both goals well after scoring 16 goals to help Stanley to the League Two title last season, while McConville showed he had lost none of his free kick prowess.

Both Coleman and his counterpart David Wagner fielded strong starting XIs with every Stanley player part of last season's championship-winning squad.

The Reds started well with Jordan Clark having an early effort blocked, while McConville whipped in a couple of dangerous free kicks with Ross Sykes unlucky to head the second one just wide.

The Terriers enjoyed a spell of possession but Jonny Maxted's first real save didn't come until the 13th minute when he kept out Alex Pritchard's long range strike. Philip Billing then sent a free kick sailing over the Stanley goal.

Jackson made his first chance count on 18 minutes when he ran onto a through ball from Billy Kee and calmly slotted past Ben Hamer into the far corner of the net.

The Terriers put a number of balls into the box but Stanley's defence stood firm and Billing's effort from distance was easy for Maxted on the half hour mark.

Jackson doubled the tally on 41 minutes when he pounced on a defensive mistake, the frontman then rounding the goalkeeper to slide the ball into the empty net.

Reds boss Coleman swapped it around at half-time with Piero Mingoia making his second Stanley debut, Sam Finley on for his debut and Harvey Rodgers, Ben Richards-Everton, Liam Nolan and a trialist entering the fray. Two-goal hero Jackson left the field while Huddersfield also brought on three substitutes at the break.

It then became a tale of substitutions as Kee went off for another trialist just before the hour mark and then Huddersfield made wholesale changes.

Finley, signed from Fylde in the summer, had a go but his effort was easy for Town's new keeper Joel Coleman while last season's Huddersfield goalscorer Tom Ince fired wide at the other end.

Huddersfield pressed in the final 15 minutes but it was McConville who had the final say. Stanley won a free kick on the edge of the area on 83 minutes and the winger found the bottom corner of the Huddersfield net for a morale-boosting pre-season victory ahead of the League One campaign.
