Southport 1 Stanley 1

24 July 2018

Accrington Stanley were held to a 1-1 draw by a determined Southport side at Haig Avenue in their fourth pre-season fixture of the summer.

Billy Kee's headed goal barely two minutes after coming off the substitute's bench gave Stanley the lead at the start of the second half.

Southport's Nathan Lowe made it 1-1 in the 70th minute, his free kick beating a scrambling Jonny Maxted at the near post.

The result means John Coleman's side remain unbeaten in a pre-season campaign that has seen the Reds score 11 goals.

Coleman was forced to make a change to his starting eleven ahead of kick-off, with Reagan Ogle replacing Harvey Rodgers in the line-up after the latter picked up a knock during the warm up.

There was very little of note in the opening 20 minutes, both sides looking to keep possession and build up momentum.

Danny Williams had Stanley's first real chance in the in 22nd minute, beating his man as he pushed towards the byline and prodding the ball home, only to see it cleared off the line at the last moment.

The game began to open up after that, and Maxted then kept the scores level just after half an hour, saving Jason Gilchrist's effort after the striker pounced on a Ross Sykes error and raced through on goal.

Kee replaced a trialist up front at half-time and was on the scoresheet within two minutes of taking the field.

Piero Mingoia found room down the right and floated a cross into the area towards Kee, who powered his header past Dan Hanford to put the Reds ahead.

The frontman almost doubled the lead three minutes later, curling a free kick from 20-yards around the wall, only to see it come back of the inside of the post and away to safety.

Southport levelled the match with twenty minutes to go, Lowe firing a low free kick from 25-yards out past a scrambling Maxted.

The Reds were then put under pressure as the hosts searched for a winner, but neither side could find a winner and the game finished level.
