Coley steps up hunt

12 July 2018

John Coleman is in talks with three or four players as he focuses on Stanley's first pre-season friendly at home to Premier League Huddersfield on Saturday (3pm).

Scott Brown is the latest to sign a contract and Coleman admits he is on the hunt for just a few more players ahead of the League One opener at home to Gillingham on August 4th.

"I think we need a couple of strikers, a centre half and a goalkeeper and then we will be done," said Coleman.

"Luckily we kept most of the squad from last season and, while we have had one or two enquiries for our players, they are not club-changing money for us and we are in a position where we can wait.

"We are in a position to develop players and it would be folly to let them go elsewhere to develop a bit more and then they get several million for them. We can do that ourselves."

Stanley have faced Huddersfield over the last two seasons - one behind-closed-doors.

"The first year they wiped the floor with us but last year we did a lot better and hopefully we can improve again this year.

"We are also taking an Accrington XI to Shelley FC in the North West Counties League on the same day so it should mean players are getting plenty of game time under their belt wherever they play.

"We have had a good pre-season so far, the heat is draining and you have to be mindful of that, but we know a good pre-season sets us up for the season and then we can focus on other things rather than fitness throughout the campaign.

"Historically we finish the season well after a strong pre-season so hopefully this will carry on.

"We have some tough friendly games in Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers at home, and you want teams who will test you."

Summer signing Will Wood and Reagan Ogle have got minor knocks.
