Stanley 2 Lincoln 2

4 December 2018

Jordan Clark scored the winning penalty as Stanley knocked out holders Lincoln City in the Checkatrade Trophy last 32 clash at the Wham Stadium.

Connor Hall, Offrande Zanzala and Sean McConville scored their penalties and Jonny Maxted pulled off three superb spot kick saves – including one in normal time - as the Reds made it through to the last 16.

John Coleman made nine changes to the team which beat Cheltenham in the FA Cup Second Round on Saturday.

Lincoln had a dream start on six minutes when Bernard Mensah ran down the left wing and played in the cross with Stanley's defence failing to clear and Matt Green had an easy tap in at the far post.

However the Reds responded two minutes later with Scott Brown driving into the Lincoln half and firing into the bottom corner of the net.

Brown almost scored at the other end on 27 minutes when Joan Luque broke and crossed it with the midfielder trying to block it in the six yard box but instead the ball deflected goalwards with Maxted preventing an own goal with his legs.

Stanley thought they had grabbed their second on 42 minutes when Zanzala's shot had keeper Sam Slocombe beaten but hit the inside of the post and somehow bounced out to be eventually cleared.

And Matty Platt almost gave the Reds a half-time lead but his 20 yard blast was tipped over the bar by Slocombe.

Sub Jamie McCombe put Lincoln ahead on 60 minutes, the defender got to an Ellis Chapman free kick at the far post and fired home.

Clark came on for the Reds on 65 minutes but the Imps were awarded a penalty a minute later when Maxted was judged to have brought down by Green in the area.

Matt Rhead took the penalty and Maxted made amends with a superb save to keep the score at 2-1.

McConville was next to enter the fray as Stanley looked for the equaliser and it came on 70 minutes when Hall fed Clark and he rifled the ball into the far corner of the net – a superb goal.

Stanley finished strongly with Slocombe denying McConville after the winger skipped his way into the area and Clark's deflected effort was just over before the drama of penalties.
