Right the wrongs: Coley

24 December 2018

John Coleman is looking to bring more festive cheer to Stanley fans when the Reds host Shrewsbury on Boxing Day.

Stanley celebrated a 3-0 win at Plymouth on Saturday after four straight league defeats and moved into 10th place in the table.

Now they are out to build on that against the Shrews, who have a recently appointed manager Sam Ricketts, and have former Reds Omar Beckles and Shaun Whalley in their ranks.

Stanley lost 1-0 at Shrewsbury earlier in the season with keeper Connor Ripley sent off on 15 minutes.

“We have the opportunity to put right the wrongs of our visit to Shrewsbury earlier this season,” said Coleman.

“We were comfortably the better side at the start of the game, and it looked like it was going to be a matter of time before we scored, but our goalkeeper being sent off early on changed the game.

“Shrewsbury have improved since then and we've seen that.”

After struggling at the wrong end of the table under John Askey, Ricketts came in at the beginning of December and they have won three of the last six league games.

“Sam did really well in charge of Wrexham and it's no surprise to me that he was offered the Shrewsbury job.

“He's not been there long but he's already done well and steadied the ship and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

“Our recent record on Boxing Day has not been what I would like it be, but we have the chance to put that right.”

On loan Middlesbrough stopper Ripley admitted he wants to make amends after his red card.

“In hindsight, I can't have any complaints,” said the 25-year-old. “It was the right decision. It felt hard done to at the time but I just have to learn from it, hopefully rectify it on Boxing Day and move on.

“It was frustrating as I know only 15 minutes had gone but we looked like we were on top and had a good chance of winning but it's behind us now and we have to look forward to the game.”
