Billy Kee admitted there were tears as the final whistle blew last night to signal Accrington Stanley's promotion to League One.
Kee has been the talisman for Stanley this season, scoring 25 goals, being crowned EFL League Two Player of the Season while dealing with the problems of depression which he has openly talked about.
There was a joke on Twitter that John Coleman checks for his wallet, house keys and Billy Kee when he leaves the house but the striker is quick to point out that it's not all about him.
He scored a double against Yeovil to make sure Stanley were promoted to League One for the first time in their history - they did play in the third tier in 1958-60 but that was after the league was restructured.
“I don't know what to say, I can only say how great the back four have been, the goalie and the midfield and they are why I have had the season I have had," said Kee.
“They have been keeping things tight and when it's tight you have always got a chance of scoring.
“I wouldn't have cared who had scored against Yeovil. I scored a header which I don't do often and then I have got a trademark goal for me, where the goalie parried it and I threaded it in, but the reason we won was because the back four kept a clean sheet."
Kee admits he is a footballer who doesn't particularly like football but he is pleased he didn't choose the option of working on a building site, which he did look at doing when he fell out of love with the game.
“At the end of the day I was ready to pack in football nine months ago but it's turned around and what a brilliant year it has been.
"I owe this club a lot. I have been playing ten years now and I have not had a promotion so this means the world to me.
"I have been in some good teams but promotions come around once in a lifetime.
“We just needed to get over the line and, as a team, we now believe we can win the league title. We have been so consistent, especially the second half of the season, and we are going to win this now, that's our aim."
And Kee, who has played in League One with Burton and Scunthorpe, has no fear of what stepping up a division means for Stanley.
“We are Accrington, we are not scared of anyone. We play against top teams all the time, the Burnley's Preston's have come here and we have beat them.
"For anyone who comes to Accrington our home form has been terrific, especially in the second half of this season.
"We are also strong away from home and I have every confidence we will be fine in League One. We are looking forward to to it – it's the first pre-season I am looking forward to as I don't like running but I won't mind this time!"
