Stanley 3 Boro U21 2

19 September 2017

Stanley sub Liam Nolan scored in stoppage time to give the Reds victory over Middlesbrough Under 21s in their opening Checkatrade Trophy Northern Group B clash.

The Reds had to twice come from behind against Boro before midfielder Nolan, who had only been on the pitch around 10 minutes, fired home his first Stanley goal and the winner.

John Coleman rotated his squad, giving full debuts to Erico Sousa and Boro loanee Callum Johnson with five Academy players on the bench.

Stanley bossed the early proceedings with debutant Sousa put a couple of testing balls into the box while Mallik Wilks tested Boro keeper Zach Hemming and Tom Dallison headed over the bar.

The Reds were creating the majority of the chances with Hull loanee Jonny Edwards firing just wide on the half hour mark.

However it was Boro who took the lead on 32 minutes when they broke down the right through Mikail Soisalo and Newcastle-born Patrick Reading fired home from 12 yards out.

The home side continued to press with a Sousa effort deflected into the arms of Hemming while Leeds loan striker Wilks fired over the bar in a good position as Stanley trailed at the break.

Dallison headed wide after the restart while Mekhi McLeod shot the wrong side of the post as Stanley looked for the equaliser.

And it finally came on 54 minutes when Scott Brown got the ball 20 yards out and fired it into the net.

Stanley almost went ahead three minutes later when a goalmouth scramble ended with Edwards forcing a strong save from Hemming.

Wilks went on a stunning run into the visiting area with his final shot inches wide of the far post as the Reds continued to carve out the best opportunities.

But it was Boro went back in front on 65 minutes through a quick counter attack with Luke Armstrong getting the ball in the area and finding a way past Aaron Chapman.

However it was soon level again with a superb run from McLeod on 69 minutes and he found Wilks who thundered the ball into the net.

And the crossbar denied Stanley the lead when Edwards found the woodwork with an overhead kick.

Youth team player Niall Watson came on in the 85th minute for his Stanley debut, Edwards glanced a header wide before Nolan's late heroics.
