Sousa looks to build on goal

4 October 2017

Erico Sousa was glad to get his name on the Accrington Stanley scoresheet – and now he wants more goals.

Sousa came to the Wham Stadium last season but international clearance stopped him playing for the Reds until he finally put pen to paper in the summer.

The Portuguese winger hasn't been able to cement a place in the matchday squad as yet but the Checkatrade Trophy games have given him a chance to impress.

Despite the Reds losing 2-1 to a late Blackpool goal last night, Sousa scored and got his own ovation from the Stanley fans as he did his warm down after being substituted.

“That surprised me (the ovation) - it made me feel good,” said the 22-year-old. “It feels like it's been a while since I have played so I was happy to get some game time.

“It is a chance to impress when you play these games and you have got to take it so I was glad I was scored. I must admit, I would have been more embarrassed if I hadn't scored from close range in the position I was in but I was glad to see it go in!

“I just can't wait for the next game now. I hope to be in the squad for Saturday and if I come on, I will try and impress and if not, I will keep working hard."

While Sousa wants to make a bigger impact on the first team, he knows he can have no complaints with the Reds currently in third place in League Two.

“There is pressure for players like me in these games but we have a good squad at Accrington.

“The players who are playing, they are good players and the manager knows what he is doing. I know though when he needs me I am ready to come on and I just have to do my job.

“I did have a few more chances in the Blackpool game but they didn't hit the target so it's something I have to work on. I was cramping towards the end through lack of game time so that's something I need to work on as well."
