A trip to Exeter City does hold a special place in the hearts of many Stanley fans – especially boss John Coleman.
Rewind to January 2006, a Monday night live on Sky TV, Stanley were top of the Conference with the Grecians in second spot.
Stanley won 3-1 courtesy of two goals by Gary Roberts and one by Rommy Boco and went 11 points clear with a game in hand – and Coleman said that was the point when he knew Accrington would return to the Football League after a 44-year absence.
Coleman's men travel to Exeter on Saturday looking to make history again by reaching League One this season.
Stanley are in third spot with Paul Tisdale's side once again one of Accrington's rivals for promotion, in fourth spot, four points behind the Reds.
“I think that game at Exeter was the biggest game in our history,” said Coleman. “That win changed the world forever as an Accy fan. I think it was bigger than the Woking game (where Stanley sealed promotion). It was the Exeter win which won us the league and got us promoted and it would be nice to do it again.
“It was a pivotal game as it was the match which made everyone sit up and realise we were going to get promoted.
“I remember it like it was yesterday. There was some inspired goalkeeping from Robbie Elliot, Gary Roberts scored a couple of goals and Rommy Boco was always a threat.
“And Peter Cavanagh got away with a horrendous challenge - I don't think he would ever get away with again.
“While the game on Saturday can't be that pivotal, if we win it could open a gap on the chasing pack.
"If they win, they will close the gap on us."
