Selection battle boosts Gornell

6 October 2016

Stanley striker Terry Gornell expects John Coleman to have a selection headache for Saturday's game with Cheltenham Town – and thinks that can only be a good thing.

The 26-year-old came into the side for Tuesday's Checkatrade Trophy game at Chesterfield and scored twice in a 4-1 win.

That was one of six changes to the side that had lost at Cambridge United and Gornell believes it shows the depth of options available to the management.

“The gaffer has created a great squad here now and we're only just realising that now,” he said. “We could have a clean bill of health this weekend with just the suspensions for Sean McConville and Janoi Donacien, which are disappointing, but apart from that I think everyone could be available.

“It'd be great to get another start (on Saturday) but we'll see what happens. I'll be ready either way and looking forward to it.”

Gornell quickly formed a relationship with debutant Gary Taylor-Fletcher, with the 35-year-old scoring one and making one in the game.

Having signed on non-contract terms, talks continue about something more permanent for the former Blackpool and Huddersfield front man and Gornell feels he adds to the attacking options.

“I met Gary at the ground and we had a little conversation before kick off where he asked me how I played. We hit it off pretty well. He's a good player and it's always easier to play alongside good players. He's definitely one of those if you look at his career. He was great on Tuesday and that addition looks great for the squad.”

Now attention turns to Cheltenham, a side Gornell played for between July 2013 and January 2015.

He's not expecting turning out against a former team to have an impact should he get the nod to start.

“It's not really any different for me. I had a good time down there, it's a lovely place but I'm the type of person that when I leave I leave the place behind and it's just another game that we're all looking forward to.”
