Stanley lost out to a Matt Godden goal as they suffered defeat to bogey team Stevenage.
The Reds haven't beaten Stevenage since 2010 and it was Boro who denied them automatic promotion on the final day of last season.
Despite bossing the first half, the Reds couldn't take their chances and it was Godden's 71st minute goal which meant it was the 44 visiting fans went home happy.John Coleman switched Sean McConville into the left back role as he changed things around in a bid to be create more chances at home.
Shay McCartan started after been given the all-clear following heart tests after he was taken ill at the Bradford FA Cup tie two weeks ago.
Stanley dominated the first half but were unable to take their chances.
Reds winger Jordan Clark tricked his way into the area with his shot punched away by Jamie Jones in the early stages while McCartan, Clark and Rommy Boco were testing the Stevenage defence with quick link-up play.
The ball was sticking and the players were slipping and sliding due to the persistent sleet which made for an unpredictable match.
Defender Zac Vyner came close from 25 yards for the Reds on 25 minutes and they piled on the pressure with, three minutes later, McCartan going on a surging run with his final shot deflected onto the roof of the net.
Stevenage came more into the game towards the end of the half with the pace of Harry McKirdy a threat for the Reds.
Still there were chances for Stanley though with Omar Beckles seeing his thumping header go agonisingly over from a McConville corner as the first half finished all-square.
Stevenage were the ones pressing after the break with Gorman testing Elliot Parish for the first time with a low shot.
However, Stanley still had chances with a McCartan free kick on the edge of the area over the bar.
John O'Sullivan came on for Clark on 67 minutes but it was Stanley defence in action next, having to defend desperately as the ball bobbled around their penalty area.
Stevenage were pressing and the goal came on 71 minutes when a long ball forward found Godden on the edge of the area and he fired home the winner.
Stanley put on all three subs with one of them, John O'Sullivan, racing forward but keeper Jones denied him an equaliser with just three minutes to go as Stevenage held out for the win.
