Buxton happy with show

1 May 2016

Adam Buxton admitted it was a shock to see Mark Hughes celebrating Stanley's winner at Wycombe – be he didn't care who scored.

Left back Buxton was compared to Chelsea's John Terry in John Coleman's post match interview for his strong show while it was his defensive partner Hughes who popped up at the other end to fire home the winner with 13 minutes left at Adams Park.

It means if Stanley beat Stevenage in the final game of the season next weekend, they will be in League One.

“When you play Wycombe you know it's going to be a physical game as they like to turn you and I was just happy to win my personal battles and hopefully go on and win the game,” said Buxton, 23.

“It was one of the hardest games I have ever played in as they are non-stop at putting you on the back foot, turning you if you are facing your own goal and battling in the air but we knew, if we could get the ball down and play, we could hurt them.

“I think we started with a few nerves but grew into the game and then we missed some chances and could have had three or four penalties, one on myself which was 100 per cent a penalty.”

Stanley had to wait until the 77th minute when Josh Windass's free kick was pushed onto the post by Aston Villa loan keeper Benjamin Siegrist and Hughes was there to tap home his first Stanley goal.

“I was standing right behind Josh when he hit it and I thought it was a goal,” continued Buxton.

"The keeper has managed to get an unbelievable touch on it and then I could see Hughesy in slow motion putting it in at about two miles an hour!

“I wouldn't care who was the match winner but he was the more unlikely source. I was made up for him.”

And Buxton praised the almost 600 travelling fans for their unending support.

“When we arrived at the ground and we could hear them singing, that settled me down. It gives you a massive boost to have them there and the non-stop singing helped. It gets you over the line.”
