Stanley 1 Leyton Orient 0

25 March 2016

Scott Brown scored just after half-time to guide Accrington Stanley to an important win in their bid for promotion against Leyton Orient.

The midfielder converted thanks to Billy Kee's chest down for the midfielder to hammer home from the edge of the area and take Stanley to within one point behind the automatic promotion places.

Victory in the first match of the Easter weekend saw John Coleman's men take their good run of form to three wins in the last four matches, while Orient suffered their first defeat on the road in 2016.

The visitors made a good start with both Sammy Moore and Armand Gnanduillet having efforts fly not far over the crossbar.

Shay McCartan had previously scored in the three successive home matches prior to victory away at Dagenham and Redbridge last weekend.

The attacking midfielder was on the hunt to extend that run, but skied his early volley from Sean McConville's corner despite being in an unmarked position.

Another corner routine caused problems for the O's as McConville found space to take aim on the corner of the box.

A good exchange gave to winger a chance to shoot, but former Stanley goalkeeper Alex Cisak did well to parry the strike away from danger.

Piero Mingoia fired just off target with an opportunity inside the area as the half ended goalless.

While the two teams were wasteful with their few chances in the first-half, Accrington took the lead less than six minutes into the second.

Matt Crooks' injury against Plymouth Argyle has helped Brown's bid to earn a place in the starting eleven after joining from Grimsby Town in January.

The midfielder has been in fine form since holding down a place in the line-up and capped off another good display with an excellent goal from the edge of the area.

A cross from the left was well chested down by Kee and fell perfectly into Brown's path to fire his effort into the bottom corner.

That lead for Stanley was almost doubled moments later as McConville raced through on goal straight after the restart. Goalkeeper Cisak rushed off his line well to deny the man who has featured in every match for the Reds this season.

Orient made a couple of attack-minded substitutions to find a way back into the match, but Kevin Nolan's side couldn't create any real opportunities to equalise despite throwing plenty of players forward.

Ollie Palmer was introduced for the O's as part of those changes and the striker muscled his way into a good position and past a couple of defenders.

Ross Etheridge, who had little to do throughout the match, spotted the danger early and was on hand to collect the ball from the striker's feet.

Mingoia had one final chance to widen the margin of victory late on and was denied again by Cisak as Accrington head into another crucial match at Newport County on Easter Monday.

Starting line-up: Etheridge; Halliday, Davies, Hughes, Pearson; Conneely, Brown; Mingoia, McCartan, McConville; Kee

Subs not used: Mooney, Buxton, Procter, Fosu, Windass, Boco, Gornell
