Coley expects Exeter response

23 January 2016

John Coleman doesn't expect Exeter City to be suffering from any sort of FA Cup hangover when his Accrington Stanley side meet them at St James Park this afternoon.

The Grecians took Premier League side Liverpool to a third round replay before losing at Anfield in midweek.

Now they turn their attention back to League Two and a clash against the Reds and the manager doesn't think they'll be any more vulnerable for the experience.

“Of course there's an impact on you but that doesn't mean you're going to lose,” he said. “I remember we played Huddersfield in a massive cup tie and two days later we played Hereford and we were exceptional and won 2-0. That shows it can happen the other way.

“The game against Liverpool will have no bearing on the game against us. I'd be flabbergasted if the way they played against Liverpool and the tactics they played with were replicated against us.

“I watched them against Morecambe recently and I think I got a better idea of how they'll play from that. I think it will be a different starting eleven to the one that played in the FA Cup. I'm sure they'll know all about us too.

“Paul Tisdale likes his team to play a passing game which is what we try to do here too. If you've got two teams committed to doing that it generally lends itself to a good game of football and hopefully that's what will happen today.”

Stanley remain in a play-off position ahead of the game, three points ahead of eighth placed Wimbledon in sixth spot.

But Coleman believes it's the toughest division for years and nothing is certain yet, though with four of the five teams above them playing each other this weekend there is an opportunity to make up some ground.

“The FA Cup has shown the quality in League Two,” he explained. “Not just Exeter, but Portsmouth and Oxford too. There are good teams in our league and I think it's the closest it has ever been.

“It opens the door ajar and you can try to boot it in or just try to squeeze through. My waistline doesn't lend itself to squeezing through things so we'll be looking for the three points and hoping to capitalise.”
