Stanley 1 Southport 2

13 December 2016

Stanley's involvement in the Lancashire Senior Cup is over after a 2-1 defeat against Southport.

The Reds had led the second round tie thanks to Shay McCartan but were beaten by two goals from former Stanley striker James Gray.

A number of first team players were named on the team sheet, with McCartan, Arron Davies, Ross Sykes and Steven Hewitt starting along with Zak Vyner, playing for the first time since being given the all clear by medical staff.

It was an even start to the game with few early openings, with Davies guiding a low shot wide and Vyner seeing a strike blocked in the first 20 minutes.

The Reds took the lead at the mid point of the first half, with McCartan latching onto a low threaded pass, beating the offside flag and nutmegging the Southport goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

The lead lasted just a few minutes though, with two former Stanley players combining as James Caton picked out Gray inside the area and despite young keeper Nathan Wolland getting a touch to the ball it found the net.

Stanley introduced Rommy Boco and Bastien Hery at the break and enjoyed a good spell of dominance with the visitors coming close to scoring an own goal before young centre back Zehn Mohammed was denied when his header was well saved.

The Reds went closer still when a left foot shot from Boco from outside the area clattered back off the bar and was stabbed to safety.

Three minutes later a Southport cross from the left was turned goalwards and stabbed in from close range by Gray as the Sandgrounders turned it around.

Despite late pressure and a Vyner strike deflected narrowly wide the Reds couldn't find a leveller and it's Southport who will play Blackburn in the next round.
