Stanley 2 Yeovil 1

29 September 2015

A stunning winner from Matt Crooks sealed another home victory for Stanley and a fourth successive win in League Two.

Josh Windass' sixth goal of the campaign with only 8 minutes on the clock pegged back Yeovil Town from the start, but it was Josh Sheehan that provided the equaliser for the away side.

But Crooks' winner moved Stanley up to fourth and banished ghosts of last season's FA Cup defeat to the Glovers.

Stanley started brightly, continuing their positive play from the 3-0 away win over Crawley Town. It was the early pressure that threatened the Yeovil goal with Liam Wakefield challenging for a header from a Sean McConville corner but it was headed clear from Jakub Sokolik.

However, it was not long until the first goal of the game on 8 minutes with Windass breaking free of the slow Yeovil defenders and slotting the ball low and to the right of the oncoming Artur Krysiak.

The 84 away fans that made the 260 mile round trip will have been disappointed with the opening stages as they kept possession of the ball well up until the final third.

Ryan Bird had the best opportunity for the Glovers as he attempted to hook the ball towards goal at the back post but the Yeovil fans behind the goal agonizingly watched the ball fall wide of the net.

McConville's neat through ball found Windass and opened up space behind the defence, but Windass' chip could only flash across the face of goal.

An inch perfect cross from Wakefield down Stanley's right flank found the hanging jump of Windass inside the box, but the forward's header could only be diverted inches wide.

The visitors bounced back and levelled the scores through on-loan midfielder Sheehan. Against the run of play, Sheehan's forward run allowed him space to cut in onto his right foot and strike a low shot into the bottom right corner of Jason Mooney's goal.

The second half began as the first half finished, with very few clear cut chances. Crooks came the closest, managing to climb on the end of a Mingoia cross but headed straight at Krysiak.

And the midfielder then put Stanley ahead once again with a fabulous right footed shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper following a lay off from Billy Kee. It was a far cry from his miss at Huish Park that haunted him long after that cup defeat.

The home side still had plenty of time to put the game to bed, but chances through McConville and Windass only managed to force quick reaction saves from the Polish goalkeeper.

Nathan Smith was almost left red faced as he managed to divert Adam Buxton's right wing cross inches to the right of the Yeovil goal but Crooks proved to be the hero as the Reds continued their fine start to the season.
