Stanley 1-3 Oxford United

3 October 2015

Stanley's winning run came to and end with a 3-1 home defeat to Oxford United.

The Reds suffered their first league loss of the season at the Wham Stadium, with a third goal in as many games for Matt Crooks not enough as Callum O'Dowda and two from Liam Sercombe sent the visitors home happy.

The away side started the brightest of the two teams. Kemar Roofe tumbled to the ground inside the penalty box, and under the watch of Joe Wright. However, the referee deemed the striker to have fallen down too easily inside the box and no foul given.

Sercombe's sideways ball on the edge of Stanley's penalty area opened up space down the right wing for Callum O'Dowda, who could only strike the ball straight at the towering Jason Mooney.

Stanley broke through on goal with 16 minutes on the clock, Josh Windass' forward run through the Oxford defence left the attacker one-on-one with Sam Slocombe. His finishing touch was missing for Windass as he lobbed over Sercombe, and onto the roof of the net.

The opening goal of the came on the 21st minute from United winger O'Dowda. A throw in from Joe Skarz paved way for Roofe to dribble down the left wing, and deliver a precise low ball into the box that found O'Dowda to fire the ball under Mooney for 1-0.

Adam Buxton's deep cross threatened the Oxford defence as Stanley looked to level the scores immediately after conceding. His corner was met by the diving header of Sean McConville, but his low header was straight at Slocombe.

The first half head injury to Joe Wright forced the half time substitute from John Coleman, with Dean Winnard as the replacement.

There was an early scare in the second half for Stanley, a deep left sided corner kick for the away side landed on the head of Johnny Mullins, his header directed back towards the packed area and Roofe's shot on goal was cleared off the line.

Stanley were back in the game thanks to Crooks on 70 minutes, he followed up on Tuesday's cracking goal with another 25-yard goal that was helped on by a deflection, levelling the scores at 1-1.

Four minutes later and the scoreline could have been 2-1 to Stanley and they might have been on course for a fifth successive win.

Seamus Conneely's ferocious shot was parried away by Slocombe into the path of McConville, but neither McConville or Kee could find the second goal, as the ball ended up nestling on top of the goal.

Oxford found themselves in the lead once again on 79 minutes throug Sercombe, directing a Jordan Graham cross into the goal in front of the away crowd.

With 4 minutes left of normal time, it was a penalty for Oxford that settled the tie at 3-1. Liam Wakefield brought down the energetic Roofe inside the box, Sercombe stepped up to the penalty kick and smashed the ball into the top left corner of Mooney's goal.
