Let's finish with a smile: Joyce

1 May 2015

Luke Joyce wants to put a smile on the fans faces with a win over Mansfield in the final game of the season.

The skipper knows last week's 4-0 defeat at Dagenham wasn't good enough and so he is determined that Stanley sign off the 2014/25 campaign in style tomorrow.

“We were on the back of a decent run – five games unbeaten,” said Joyce. “So to put in the performance like we did last week and to concede the goals we did was really disappointing.

“We need to finish on a high. We had a long journey back to reflect on it and now we are desperate to put the smiles back on everyone's faces to finish the season off with a victory.”

The captain is one of the longest serving players at the club, with Dean Winnard, as he has been at Stanley for six seasons and Joyce is one of those having discussions about a new deal.

“You want it to be settled sooner rather than later so everyone knows where they stand. Discussions are ongoing," said the midfielder.

“I have been here six seasons and I have seen a lot of players come and go and quite a few summers like this with contract discussions. It's never nice but it is part and parcel of football.”

Joyce admitted that it's huge for a club like Stanley to be entering their 10th season in the Football League.

“It's a brilliant achievement. Every season we have been favourites for relegation and a lot of teams have probably wanted us out of the league as it's not the nicest of places to come.

“But time after time we have defied the odds and players who have come here have enjoyed playing for Accrington. Every single one of them over the 10 years has done a great job to keep Accrington in the league.

“However our ambitions have always been more than just survival and, while this has been a decent season, with the squad and players we have we are disappointed we haven't finished higher than 17th. Who knows what next season could bring?”
