Stanley Youth 3 Walsall Youth 1

30 March 2015

Stanley's under 18's came back from a goal down to beat Walsall 3-1 in their Youth Alliance fixture thanks to two goals from Max Hazeldine and one from Nathan Webb.

An open start to the game at QEGS saw both sides craft early chances, with Jack Hartley firing straight at the Walsall keeper and Dieter Downey volleying wide at one end and the visitors twice going close at the other.

It was the Saddlers who broke the deadlock when the young Reds lost the ball down the right and the resulting ball into the box found a Walsall striker who finished beyond Jack Little to make it 1-0.

But with first team manager John Coleman looking on Stanley responded straight away, levelling things up just three minutes after going behind. Hazeldine latched onto a ball behind the defence and finished emphatically past the keeper to pull things level.

Moments later Roman Hickey forced a good save from the keeper and won a corner before Little produced a good save to keep the score at 1-1.

Just before the break things turned around, with Hartley crossing to the far post and Webb gambling to nod home the second goal from close range.

And it might have been better had the visiting goalkeeper not managed to push out Hartley's left foot strike on the stroke of half time.

Walsall began the second half purposefully, forcing Little into an early block inside a congested penalty area.

Stanley weathered the early storm though and were soon creating more chances of their own, with Hazeldine spinning his defender expertly and racing away only to shoot straight down the keeper's throat.

The same wasn't true on 57 minutes though as Webb's ball into the box from the left evaded a defender and dropped to Hazeldine who snaffled up his second goal and made it 3-1.

Walsall's efforts to get back into the game proved fruitless with the home defence holding firm to keep them frustrated and sub Harry Blackburn could have extended the lead but could only fire over from a cross provided by fellow replacement Reuben Dass.

After a 2-2 draw with Port Vale late last week, John Townson's side have now taken four points from their last two games.

Stanley starting XI: Little, Wolfenden, Roberts, Hickey, Quansah, Smith, Hartley, Downey, Hazeldine, Steenson, Webb
