Stanley defender Tom Aldred felt a last minute goal at Exeter was the perfect way for him to recover from illness that had threatened to rule him out of the game.
The 24-year-old netted his second of the season in stoppage time at St James Park to give the Reds a 2-1 victory.
That goal came just minutes after he pulled off a goalline clearance and hours after he got out of his sickbed.
“That was good medicine!” said Aldred at full time. “It's been a tough week. I got a virus on the day before New Year's Eve and was pretty ill really. Fortunately I looked after myself and missed a couple of days of training, got rid of it and was able to travel down. I was obviously glad to make the game!
“If you'd seen me on Wednesday evening then nobody would've thought I could've scored a 90th minute winner on the Saturday. I was just glad to be out there and it keeps my run of games going so that's good news."With the score at 1-1 Aldred stopped an 88th minute effort from Tom Nichols hitting the net before popping up four minutes later at the other end to pounce when Kal Naismith's strike was repelled.
“It just sums up football," he reflected. "Sometimes you just get your luck on the day. I thought the second half performance deserved that bit of luck. I made the block, just saw the shot and reacted and luckily enough it just went around the post and then the 90th minute winner – well it just sat up and I managed to put it in!“I was fortunate to get the goal and that's something that I've needed to improve on. I'm hoping that I can keep scoring because there is no better feeling than scoring away from home in the 90th minute!”
