Yeovil 2 Stanley 0

16 December 2014

Stanley missed out on a third round FA Cup tie against Manchester United after two late Yeovil goals at Huish Park in the second round replay.

Simon Gillett rifled home an 85th minute goal  although Stanley felt keeper Jack Rose was fouled as he punched the ball out to the Glovers man. Then sub Kieffer Moore made it safe with a header in the 88th minute.

It was agony for Stanley who should have opened the scoring with just 12 minutes left when Shay McCartan rifled the crossbar with a 25 –yard strike and Matt Crooks headed the follow up wide with the goal at his mercy.

So Gary Johnson's men will  face United -  and for Stanley it's a league trip to Exeter.

It was a nervy game and disaster almost struck for Stanley on 12 minutes when Rose came out to the edge of the area but Tom Aldred headed over him –thankfully the ball trickled just wide of the empty goal.

Another back pass on 28 minutes this time at the other end almost let Marcus Carver in and he got around keeper Jed Steer but the stopper recovered and did enough put him off for a corner.

Boss John Coleman made a change at the break bringing on Josh Windass for Carver with Huddersfield loan man Matt Crooks pushing up front.

The first strike of the second half fell to Yeovil's Gillett and his effort skimmed wide of the goal while, at the other end, Andy Procter's effort whistled just over the bar.

The game opened up and Coleman brought on Lee Molyneux in the 68th minute to shake things up as the Reds hunted for the winner. And they came close  when McCartan's 75th minute effort was pushed out by Steer and, from the corner, Michael Liddle's deflected effort could have gone anywhere but bounced out.

And then, on 78 minutes, McCartan hit the crossbar, Crooks missed the follow up and that was it for the Reds as Yeovil  scored two quick late goals to end Stanley's dream.
