Shay out to seize his chance

5 December 2014

Shay McCartan knows it's important to seize his chance in a Stanley shirt and that means turning on the style tomorrow.

The Reds face League One side Yeovil in round two of the FA Cup and McCartan could start, with John O'Sullivan and Sean Maguire cup-tied.

McCartan came on as a substitute in the 3-2 defeat to Exeter in the last game and got on the scoresheet.

“I was happy to score as I hadn't scored for three or four games but I would rather have had the three points,” said the 20-year-old, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

“Obviously, I would prefer to start games but I got a good 20 minutes against Exeter and it does give you the opportunity to express yourself and it's important to take your chance when you do get it – Piero  (Mingoia) took his chance a couple of weeks ago.

“With Johno and Seani missing it does give someone else a chance and hopefully it will be me. I do have faith in my own ability and it's about showing it when I am on the pitch.”

McCartan knows the game tomorrow is huge and says there is a buzz around the club for the FA Cup tie.

“The FA Cup is massive for the club as it's a lot of money and for the players we can dream about getting Man United, Arsenal or Liverpool away in the third round – or even my former club Burnley!

“We are confident as we were never out of our depth against Notts County in the first round and there wasn't a lot between the two sides so we expect the same again against Yeovil.”
