Stanley 2-0 Burton Albion

The Reds make it seven games unbeaten with goals from McConville and Sykes

29 December 2019

Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville grabbed his second goal in as many games as the Reds secured a 2-0 win over Burton Albion at the Wham Stadium.

After netting a late winner in the 1-0 victory over Blackpool, the winger opened the scoring during this afternoon's game on 39 minutes as he slotted the ball past Kieran O'Hara from close range.

It looked as though the Reds had doubled their lead three minutes after the break when Offrande Zanzala calmly finished the ball past O'Hara, but the goal was then ruled out for offside.

Stanley did grab a second goal on 65 minutes through Ross Sykes, as the centre-back rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net.

John Coleman's side are now seven games unbeaten, with Rochdale visiting the Wham Stadium on New Year's Day.

The Reds started the game the better of the two sides, with the best chance of the opening quarter of an hour falling to Zanzala, but the striker could only drag his shot wide of the target.

McConville was the next Reds player to try his luck at goal, but the winger could only hit a free-kick wide of the woodwork.

A minute later and goalkeeper Josef Bursik made an outstanding save with his legs to deny Lucas Akins, after the visitors had broken forward at pace.

The best chance for the visitors in the first half came on 35 minutes when Colin Daniel raced into the penalty area, but the full-back could only hit his effort into the side netting.

Four minutes later and the Reds opened the scoring as the ball fell nicely for McConville inside the box and the winger slotted it past O'Hara to grab his second goal in as many games.

After the half-time break, Stanley again started the better of the two sides with Zanzala having a goal ruled out for offside on 48 minutes.

The best chance of the game for Burton came on 60 minutes when Liam Boyce displayed some nice footwork, but the striker was unlucky to see his effort crash against the crossbar.

Five minutes later and Stanley had grabbed a second goal when McConville sent the ball into the box and Sykes rose highest to head the ball into the back of the net.

Coleman's side almost made it three on 85 minutes but O'Hara produced an incredible save to deny a header from Zanzala.

Next up for the Reds is a home tie against Rochdale at the Wham Stadium on New Year's Day, 3pm kick-off.
