Harper and Devonport secure Under-18s a spot in FA Youth Cup third round

23 November 2022

Striker Calvin Harper and substitute Owen Devonport scored the goals as Accrington Stanley's Under-18s secured a third round place in the FA Youth Cup.

John Miles’ side saw off Hartlepool in the first round and faced a tough trip to the University of Bolton Stadium.

Top scorer Harper struck in the 32nd minute before Devonport made it safe for 10-man Stanley in stoppage time to secure the Reds a third round tie at Premier League Leeds United (date to be arranged).

Stanley started well with Alex Henderson heading into the arms of keeper Jack Dallimore while, on 16 minutes, Jack Massey played a looping ball into Harper in the six-yard box but he couldn’t guide it on target.

Top scorer Harper was denied by the legs of Dallimore while Henderson’s low shot was saved by the Wanderers stopper.

Bolton captain Joel Burgess shot from distance but it was easy for goalie Max Clayton.

The Reds took the lead on 32 minutes when a back pass fell short, Harper got the ball, ran forward and slotted it into the far corner of the net – his 15th goal of the season.

Winger Lewis Trickett could have made it two minutes later when a ball came to him at the far post but he fired over the bar.

Just before the break, Stanley came close again with a loose ball in the box but, despite a couple of attempts on goal, no one could find the target.

Bolton looked to get back on level terms after the break and Leo Graham hit the post with a volley on 50 minutes while Harrison Fleury turned and fired at Clayton.

Wanderers were taking the game to the Reds and Stanley needed a second goal but Trickett turned and fired straight at Dallimore.

Stanley had a great chance on 73 minutes when an Emerich Polly cross found Harper at the back post but his header was collected by Dallimore.

Harper also turned and fired wide and Bolton survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles as the game hung in the balance.

Stanley’s goal also led a charmed life late on as Yestin Shakespear just needed a touch at the far post on 84 minutes but couldn’t connect with the ball.

The Reds were reduced to ten men on 90 minutes when captain Aaron Pickles was sent off for a second bookable offence.

However, Stanley struck next when Devonport got the ball in the area and rifled it into the roof of the net for another celebratory night for the Reds youth team.
