REPORT: Gillingham 1 Stanley 0

First half goal consigns Reds to away loss

12 August 2023

A first half goal consigned Accrington Stanley to defeat at Gillingham on their first away trip of the League Two campaign.

A 29th minute goal from Ashley Nadesan meant the Gills have won both their league games so far while John Coleman’s men couldn’t add to their opening day victory over Newport County.

Defender Seb Quirk came in for the injured Lewis Shipley in the only change from last Saturday’s win.

Stanley started well before the Gills grew into the game but both teams didn’t create any clear-cut chances.

The best early chance came on 15 minutes when Jack Nolan’s cross found Sean McConville at the far post but he headed over the goal.

McConville fired over in another attack while Shaun Williams rifled over the bar for Gillingham.

The home side took the lead on 29 minutes when a goal kick wasn’t cleared properly by Stanley and Tom Nichols sent a through ball to Nadesan in the area and he slotted past Toby Savin.

They almost had a second before the break as the ball pinged around the area from a corner but Savin was strong to deny Robbie McKenzie.

After the re-start, Josh Andrews headed a McConville cross off-target while Scott Malone headed wide for the home side.

Nolan came close to an equaliser with a 55th minute free kick but it was narrowly wide.

Gillingham then enjoyed a spell of pressure, putting a number of balls into the box which the Reds dealt with.

Coleman made three changes on the 65th minute with Rosaire Longelo, Shaun Whalley and Korede Adedoyin coming on.

The Gills continued to put the Reds defence under pressure without seriously testing Savin and Matt Lowe came on in the 75th minute to try and change the game in Stanley’s favour.

Neil Harris’ side had a great chance to put the game to bed soon after with Nadesan’s strike blocked by Hills and George Lapslie rifled over the follow-up.

Gillingham limited the Stanley challenge and the Reds left the Priestfield Stadium empty-handed.

Stanley: Savin, Mellor (Lowe), Rich-Baghuelou, Hills, Quirk, Conneely, Coyle, Nolan (Longelo), McConville (Whalley), Leigh, Andrews (Adedoyin).

Subs: Isherwood, Sloane, Pickles.

Yellow: Andrews, Rich-Baghuelou.
