REPORT: Stanley 1 Bradford City 1

Reds lose 4-1 on penalties in the Carabao Cup first round

8 August 2023

It was penalty heartache for Accrington Stanley as they lost 4-1 to Bradford City after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.

Jack Nolan and Korede Adedoyin couldn’t convert their spot kicks while the Bantams scored all theirs to reach the second round.

It was a young Stanley side who lined up against their League Two rivals with Academy products Aaron Pickles and Connor O’Brien starting and 16-year-old Anjola Popoola on the bench.

In the opening 24 minutes, there wasn’t a lot of goalmouth action and neither side had a shot on target.

The first real chance was a Rosaire Longelo cross which found Adedoyin in the box but his effort was saved by Harry Lewis.

Bradford’s first shot on target came on 30 minutes but former Red Brad Halliday’s long-range effort was easy for Toby Savin.

The Bantams opened the scoring in the first minute of added time in the first half when Alex Pattison raced clean through with only Savin to beat and he slotted the ball beyond the Stanley keeper.

The Reds came close to an equaliser immediately but Adedoyin’s fierce shot was well saved by Lewis.

Tommy Leigh came on for the second half replacing Liam Coyle, who had been booked in the first half.

Three minutes after the restart captain Shaun Whalley tricked his way into the box but his strike, from a tight angle, was kept out by Lewis.

Andy Cook, League Two’s top scorer last season, headed over for City and had an effort saved by Savin as the visitors looked for a second.

Leigh fired narrowly wide from a free kick on the hour mark before John Coleman introduced Jack Nolan and Josh Andrews into the fray on 64 minutes.

A minute later Whalley forced another save out of Lewis before Stanley equalised.

From the resulting corner on 66 minutes, Nolan fed the ball in and Birmingham loan striker Andrews headed home his first goal for the Reds.

Both sides looked for the winner and, in the 89th minute, a long-range blast by Dan Martin was almost deflected into the goal but the Bantams backline recovered.

Ollie Patrick came on in the 90th minute for his Stanley debut and, despite 14 minutes of added time, the game went to penalties in front of the Bradford fans in the Coppice End with Mark Hughes side the winners.

Stanley: Savin, Quirk, Hills, Pickles, O’Brien (Nolan), Whalley, Coyle (Leigh), Martin, Longelo (Patrick), Adedoyin, Lowe (Andrews).

Subs: Isherwood, Rich-Baghuelou, McConville, Conneely, Popoola.

Yellow: Coyle, Whalley, Hills.

Attendance: 2368 (1350 from Bradford).
