REPORT: Stanley 4 Sutton United 1

Reds back to winning ways thanks to Leigh double, Longelo goal and a huge return goal for Pritchard

16 September 2023

Tommy Leigh scored his first goals of the new campaign as Accrington Stanley returned to winning ways with a 4-1 win over Sutton United - but the big news was the return of Joe Pritchard.

After two league losses, the Reds needed to bounce back and Leigh converted a penalty in the first half before adding a second just after the break.

Rosaire Longelo scored his first league goal of the campaign and there was a welcome return to action for Pritchard, who celebrated as he added the fourth in added time following nine months out with injury.

Norwich loan defender Lewis Shipley returned to the starting line-up for the first time since he picked up an injury on the opening day of the season.

It was all Sutton in the early exchanges with Harry Smith scuffing an effort well wide and Aiden O’Brien’s shot was deflected wide.

In between, Shaun Whalley had a close range shot blocked but United continued to force the pace.

Josh Coley’s goalbound shot was blocked on 13 minutes while the Reds played a number of testing balls into the box but were unable to capitalise.

There were limited chances for either side with the next big one on 35 minutes with Leigh teeing up a shot but firing narrowly wide.

Christian N’Guessan chipped an effort just over the bar for Sutton before the Reds took the lead.

Stanley were awarded a penalty when Craig Clay was judged to have tripped Whalley in the area and Leigh sent former Reds goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis the wrong way in the first minute of added on time  – his first goal of the season.

Pritchard came on at half-time for his first game back since December when he tore his Achilles tendon.

It was two on 57 minutes when a long goal kick found Josh Andrews, his ball into the box was deflected to Leigh on the edge of the area and he curled the ball into the far corner of the net.

Ben Goodliffe fired over as United looked to get back in it while Whalley’s shot was straight at Bouzanis as Stanley looked for a third.

They got it on 63 minutes when Pritchard fed Longelo, who charged forward from the back and, one-on-one with Bouzanis, he fired past the stopper.

Sutton replied immediately when Coley found Omari Patrick in the area and his shot nestled in the back of the net.

Pritchard almost added a fourth in the 83rd minute but, after weaving his way into the area, his effort was inches wide of the post.

However Pritchard got the goal he deserved when he stroked home Whalley's cross in the fourth minute of added time to celebrations in front of the Farleys Clayton End.
