REPORT: Stanley 3 Swindon Town 4

Grandstand finish from the Reds with three goals in added time but they drop out of Play-Off places

28 November 2023

Accrington Stanley scored three goals in added time but dropped out of the Play-Off places after a 4-3 loss to Swindon Town.

Stanley were trailing 4-0 in the 92nd minute but Cody Adedoyin’s solo strike and a Brad Hills double almost sparked an unbelievable comeback – and Adedoyin had a strike cleared off the line in the 101st minute.

It was agony for the Reds who also missed a penalty, with Tommy Leigh’s spot kick saved in the second half.

Shaun Whalley returned to the starting line-up, replacing Lewis Shipley who was on the bench.

Jack Nolan had an early chance for Stanley, collected by Murphy Mahoney, while the Swindon keeper dived low to push away a Josh Andrews long range strike.

Swindon were awarded a penalty on 17 minutes for a challenge by Leigh on George McEachran and Dan Kemp hit it straight down the middle to open the scoring.

Leigh drove an effort over the bar while Nolan dinked the ball just over the woodwork as Stanley pressed for an equaliser.

However, Swindon made it two on 31 minutes as, while Stanley were appealing for a foul on Rosaire Longelo near the centre circle, Remeao Hutton broke down the right wing and crossed for League Two top scorer Jake Young to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.

Whalley fired over from the edge of the area and Nolan’s goalbound strike was blocked.

Stanley had had 15 shots by the end of the first half, three on target, while Swindon were clinical with their two shots on target.

Boss John Coleman was sent to the stands by referee Sebastian Stockbridge at half-time.

The Reds came so close on 47 minutes when Nolan’s cross/shot came back off the inside of the post.

Matt Lowe almost pounced on a loose ball in the area but Mahoney just got there first while Andrews headed inches wide.

Stanley were forcing the pace but it was 3-0 on 60 minutes when Saidou Khan got the ball 25-yards out and rifled an unstoppable shot into the top of the net.

Young volleyed wide for Swindon just after.

Stanley were awarded a penalty on 68 minutes for handball but Leigh’s spot kick was saved by the diving Mahoney.

Leigh had a free kick pushed out minutes later and Hills goalbound header was blocked by a team-mate.

To add to Stanley’s woes, Norwich loan goalkeeper Jon McCracken came off injured on 76 minutes after rushing out of his area and clashing with a Swindon player with Jack McIntyre coming on for his league debut.

Cody Adedoyin fired just off target but, on 89 minutes, Hutton broke and fed sub Charlie Austin who fired home to seemingly make the game safe at 4-0.

Then came almost a grandstand finish.

In the second minute of added time, Adedoyin scored a solo effort, drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Defender Hills pushed up front and got on the end of a ball forward, dinking it over Mahoney to make it 4-2.

Then, in the 100th minute, a corner eventually found Hills and he drilled the ball home for 4-3.

The Clayton End were willing the ball into the net and, on the next attack in the 101st minute, Stanley came so close to the ultimate comeback but Adedoyin’s strike was cleared off the line.
