REPORT: Harrogate Town 2 Stanley 1

Added time goal denies Reds a point at EnviroVent Stadium

26 December 2023

Accrington Stanley lost in added time against Harrogate Town in their Boxing Day encounter.

Jack Nolan opened the scoring for the Reds on 57 minutes but six minutes later it was all-square before Town top scorer George Thomson fired home the winner in the third minute of added time.

With Joe Pritchard missing, Shaun Whalley came into the starting line-up and also was captain for the day.

Sean McConville returned to the bench for the first time since being injured mid-August against Harrogate in the league encounter at the Wham Stadium which Stanley won 2-1 with a late goal.

It was a good start from Stanley with Ben Woods testing Town goalkeeper James Belshaw from distance in the ninth minute while Joe Walsh did well to keep out top scorer Thomson’s volley at the other end.

QPR loan keeper Walsh was next in action on 23 minutes diving to push away a Matty Foulds overhead kick.

The Reds were under pressure but came close when Josh Woods pounced on a back pass and ran clean through but the Town keeper denied him.

From the resulting Whalley corner, Lewis Shipley’s header flicked off ex-Red Liam Gibson and hit the top of the crossbar.

Walsh denied Jack Muldoon from close range and Matty Daly’s long-range effort was over the bar before the break.

Stanley started the second half well and took the lead on 57 minutes when, after Ben Woods won the ball, he played it to Whalley whose cross from the right was fired into the net by Nolan in the six-yard box. It was Nolan’s sixth goal of the season.

Harrogate equalised on 63 minutes when a Thomson free kick found the head of Muldoon who, racing in at the far post, celebrated his fourth goal of the campaign.

Nolan came so close to scoring a second on 66 minutes with a downward header from a Tommy Leigh throw but Belshaw got down well to deny him.

Stanley looked for the winner and Belshaw was in action again, keeping out a Shipley header on 78 minutes.

In added time both sides went for it.

A Brad Hills header was superbly kept out by Belshaw as Stanley came so close and then, in a counter attack, brave goalkeeping from Walsh denied Jack Sutton who was clean through.

However in the third minute of added time, a Foulds free kick found Abraham Odoh at the far post. He played the ball to Thomson who drilled home the winner.
