Summer signing Lowe scores first goal at the Wham as Reds win first game but lose second

9 July 2022

New signing Matt Lowe got off the mark at the Wham Stadium in Match One of Accrington Stanley's pre-season friendly with Blackburn Rovers.

Lowe, signed from Brackley, fired home after a superb run from sub Josh Woods in the 51st minute.

It was the first chance Stanley fans – among a bumper crowd of 4,961 – had to see summer signing Lowe in the first 60-minute game with Blackburn while Shaun Whalley made his return to the Wham Stadium in a red shirt.

Burnley loan goalkeeper Lukas Jensen also made his Stanley debut against the Championship neighbours and his first action was to keep out a strike from Ben Brereton Diaz.

Sean McConville had the first real chance for the Reds on five minutes, curling an effort narrowly wide.

Trialist B headed over for the Reds while John Buckley flashed a long range strike wide and Sam Gallagher hit the post for Rovers.

Brereton Diaz did have the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for off-side and then, after a five minute interval break on the half-hour mark, the Chilean international headed over the bar.

John Coleman made changes and Stanley took the lead on 51 minutes when Woods went bombing down the right wing and played in a perfect cross for Lowe to score his second Reds goal.

Stanley: Jensen (Isherwood), Trialist A, Clark, Rich-Baghuelou, Trialist B, Martin (Scully), Hamilton (Nolan), Leigh, McConville, Whalley (Woods), Lowe

Match Two

Goals from Jack Vale and Tyrhys Dolan gave Blackburn Rovers a 2-0 win over Stanley in the second 60-minute game.

Both sides completely changed their starting XI’s after a 30-minute break with all the fully fit members of John Coleman’s squad getting a run out.

Dolan threatened early, breaking through for Blackburn but his chipped effort struck the post on nine minutes while, for Stanley, Rosaire Longelo played in a cross which unfortunately the Reds couldn’t convert.

Stanley’s defence made vital blocks as Rovers looked for the breakthrough and Savin pulled off a superb close range save to keep out Tayo Edun.

Hayden Carter’s header was easy for Savin while, at the other end, Kody Adedoyin’s strike was kept out by Aynsley Pears and Longelo couldn’t follow-up.

Blackburn scored in the 40th minute when Vale got the ball, evaded a challenge in the area and fired low past Savin.

Rovers made it two on 45 minutes when Dolan slotted home Vale’s cross.

Both Leslie Adekoya and Matty Carson had shots as they tried to get Stanley back in it but Rovers held firm.

Stanley: Savin (Isherwood), Patrick, Rodgers, Procter, O’Brien, Conneely, Coyle, Sangare (Poilly), Longelo, Pritchard (Carson), Adedoyin (Adekoya)
