REPORT: Burton Albion 0 Stanley 0

Goalless at the Pirelli Stadium in relegation battle

25 February 2023

Accrington Stanley drew 0-0 with relegation rivals Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

There wasn’t a host of chances for either side but the point means Stanley have lost just once in the last five League One games as they battle against the drop.

They remain in the bottom four ahead of next week’s visit of bottom club Forest Green while Burton stay in 18th place.

Stanley were without Liam Coyle (injured) and Tommy Leigh (suspended) but Mitch Clark returned to the starting line-up while striker Matt Lowe, out injured since September, was on the bench.

The first half was limited chances for both sides. Lukas Jensen was first in action on two minutes, denying Sam Lavelle from a Tom Hamer long throw, while Craig MacGillivray easily collected a Clark low strike.

From a goalmouth scramble Gassan Ahadme fired wide and, on 30 minutes, Clark’s ball in was deflected onto the roof of the net.

That was it really for chances and, while Stanley put a couple of balls into the box at the beginning of the second half, they couldn’t make the most of them.

After that Burton created the better chances.

Adedeji Oshilaja’s cross on the counter-attack was cleared by Mo Sangare before it found the waiting Ahadme.

On 63 minutes a corner found Oshilaja and his effort deflected off Clark’s knee a couple of yards from goal leading to Sean McConville having to clear off the line.

Two minutes later there was a big moment as Lowe came on for Aaron Pressley but it was the Brewers who had the next chance, Ahadme firing narrowly wide before Joe Powell’s cross was turned over by Jensen.

Stanley, on 70 minutes, then enjoyed a spell of pressure, the ball coming to McConville in space but it was deflected over the bar.

Longelo’s delivery raced through the six yard box but no one could get a touch while, with minutes to go, a Clark ball skimmed across the face of goal and almost found Longelo at the far post but the Brewers got there first.

On 90 minutes, Josh Walker headed wide for Burton and, while Stanley couldn’t get three points, it was a second successive league clean sheet for the Reds.

Stanley: Jensen, Fernandes, Rodgers, Sangare, Clark, Quirk, Conneely, Longelo, McConville, Whalley, Pressley (Lowe)

Subs: Isherwood, Butler-Oyedeji, Perritt, Martin, Mancini, Woods

Yellow: Whalley, McConville
