REPORT: Stanley 0 Lincoln City 3

Game turns in three second half minutes as Reds battle against the drop

4 February 2023

Accrington Stanley’s game against Lincoln City turned in three second half minutes as the Reds fight to beat the drop.

The Imps led 1-0 until the 55th minute and Stanley were still in the game.

However Lincoln then grabbed a second, a minute later Harry Perritt saw red for Stanley and Mark Kennedy’s side secured a third from the resulting free kick to celebrate the win and ease their relegation worries.

Stanley dropped to second-from-bottom of the table but have games in hand on the teams around them, starting on Tuesday at Port Vale. However they did pick up two more injuries in the defence.

Arsenal Under U21 striker Nathan Butler-Oyedeji made his Stanley debut in the one change from the loss to Premier League Leeds in the FA Cup, with Ethan Hamilton injured.

The Imps forced the early pressure but Stanley had a great chance on seven minutes when Rosaire Longelo’s cross found Ryan Astley in the area but he couldn’t get enough power on his strike.

At the other end, Ben House forced a save out of keeper Toby Savin on 13 minutes while Adam Jackson headed wide from the resulting corner.

Lincoln took the lead on 24 minutes when Teddy Bishop fed Ben House in the area and he made space for himself and fired beyond Savin.

Stanley looked to come back and a Doug Tharme strike, from a Sean McConville free kick, wasn’t far off.

The Imps came close to a second on 40 minutes when Olaminde Shodipo raced forward from a Bishop pass but Savin did well to deny him with his legs.

Stanley suffered an injury setback when defender Ryan Astley hobbled off, replaced by Perritt on 43 minutes.

Three second half minutes saw the game slip beyond Stanley.

On 55 minutes, Tharme blocked a Regan Poole strike and the ball looped into the air with Sean Roughan hooking the ball into the net.

From the kick off, the ball went back into the Stanley half and Perritt was red carded on 56 minutes for tripping Shodipo as he raced through.

From the resulting free kick on 58 minutes, Jack Diamond fed Bishop who rifled the ball home.

Savin one-handedly denied Poole from close range as Lincoln looked for a fourth against the ten-men and Charles Vernam drove the ball just wide in the final 10 minutes.

There was a lengthy delay following a clash of heads in added time and Tharme was stretchered off, meaning Stanley ended the game with nine men.
