REPORT: Stanley 4 Burton Albion 4

Late goals from Josh Woods and Rosaire Longelo rescue a point for the Reds

13 August 2022

Two late goals from Josh Woods and Rosaire Longelo meant Accrington Stanley maintained their unbeaten run in a 4-4 draw with Burton Albion.

From 3-0 down, the Reds had got it back to 3-2 through Joe Pritchard and Sean McConville and then 4-3 through Woods before Longelo slid the ball home in the 96th minute to rescue a point for John Coleman’s men.

Baba Fernandes came in for his debut at left back after signing from Nottingham Forest this week.

Burton took the lead on 10 minutes when Fernandes was judged to have brought down Gassan Ahadme in the area with Davis Keillor-Dunn sending Lukas Jensen the wrong way.

Keillor-Dunn fired wide moments later but he made no mistake on 17 minutes when, from a throw, Victor Adeboyejo fed the ball to Keillor-Dunn and he made space and fired home.

Stanley then pressed without testing keeper Viljami Sinisalo and, on a breakaway, Burton almost had a third but Adeboyejo’s cross was too heavy with two Albion players waiting in the box.

Sinisalo’s first real save came on 34 minutes, denying Shaun Whalley, but Albion were dangerous on the break and Adeboyejo blasted over from a counter-attack.

JColeman made three changes at half-time bringing on Tommy Leigh, Kody Adedoyin and Longelo.

And they almost made an immediate impression when Adedoyin sent Sean McConville clean through but Sinisalo came out to deny him with his legs.

Moments later Ethan Hamilton’s strike wasn’t far off the top corner of the net but then Burton added a third.

Jonny Smith’s cross across the face of the goal on 50 minutes wasn’t cleared and Keillor-Dunn nipped in at the far post to celebrate his hat-trick.

However from the re-start the Reds gave themselves a lifeline when McConville’s cross to the far post was headed home by Joe Pritchard.

And, on 57 minutes, Leigh flicked the ball forward to send McConville clear and the winger chipped the keeper to find the top of the net.

Mitch Clark made a superb last ditch tackle to stop ex-Red loanee Louis Moult going one-on-one with Jensen.

Burton scored a fourth on 80 minutes when Joe Powell headed against the post and the rebound was fired home by Ahadme.

Jensen then made a superb save to keep out Moult’s effort and deny Albion a fifth.

Sub Josh Woods had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes when his looping header from a Jensen goalkick made it 4-3 on 90 minutes.

Then, from a goalmouth scramble, Longelo forced the ball over the line from close range in front of the cheering Farleys Solicitors Clayton End.

Stanley had a chance to win it through Kody Adedoyin with seconds to spare but it ended all-square.
