REPORT: Sheffield Wednesday 3 Stanley 0

Reds remain in bottom four after loss at title-chasing Owls

10 April 2023

Accrington Stanley remain in the bottom four after a 3-0 defeat to title-chasing Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The Owls, who had gone six games without a win, opened the scoring in the 10th minute and, although Stanley hit the woodwork, they couldn’t find a way back.

John Coleman kept the same starting XI which beat Port Vale 3-0 on Good Friday.

Wednesday started on the attack with Lukas Jensen having to deny Lee Gregory in the opening minutes.

The Owls took the lead on 10 minutes when a ball in from the left was only headed clear to Dennis Adeniran around 12 yards out and he rifled home.

A Reece James flick header was just wide while, at the other end, Sean McConville’s free kick hit the top of the bar on 18 minutes.

Aaron Pressley burst through soon after but his strike from an angle was straight at Cameron Dawson.

Stanley made a switch in defence on 25 minutes with Harvey Rodgers, who was on a yellow card, replaced by Michael Nottingham.

Neither side created a clear-cut chance up to the break but Wednesday took an opportunity immediately after the re-start.

A corner bounced around the Stanley area with Adeniran there to hammer the ball home from around four yards out.

Tommy Leigh and Cody Adedoyin came on in the 55th minute but the next chance fell to the Owls with unmarked Gregory heading wide.

Tyreeq Bakinson shot wide in a good position as the Owls looked for a third while Stanley pressed around the Wednesday area without testing Dawson.

Matt Lowe and Rosaire Longelo came on for Stanley but the Owls added a third on 72 minutes when quick play resulted in a Barry Bannan ball over the top to Liam Palmer in the area and he finished beyond Jensen.

Adedoyin had a deflected strike pushed out by Dawson in the 89th minute as Stanley couldn’t find a way through.

Stanley:  Jensen, Clark, Rodgers (Nottingham), Tharme, Sangare, Whalley (Leigh), Coyle, Hamilton (Longelo), McConville, Pressley (lowe), Butler-Oyedeji (Adedoyin)

Subs: Savin, Nolan

Yellow: Rodgers, Hamilton
