Wonder goals from Harry Pell and Ethan Hamilton sent Accrington Stanley to the top of Group G in the final group game of the Papa John’s Trophy.

Pell crashed home from 35 yards while Hamilton’s 30-yard left foot strike was a stunner as both will be put forward for Goal of the Season.

It was what the Reds needed after their 5-1 loss to Port Vale in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday, with Tommy Leigh and Michael Nottingham scoring the others.

John Coleman’s side will now have a home draw in the next round, with Fleetwood also through to the knockout stages.

Coleman made six changes from the starting XI against the Valiants at Highbury.

Lewis Mansell got the nod up front with Sam Sherring, Archie Procter, Harvey Rodgers, Liam Coyle and Leigh also coming into the side.

Fleetwood boss Simon Grayson also made a number of changes and the Cod Army started well, Ged Garner firing over in a good position and Toby Savin denying Ryan Edmondson.

The Reds grew into the game and Pell scored a spectacular goal to put Stanley ahead on 23 minutes.

The midfielder got the ball 35 yards out, turned and fired with power with his strike bouncing off the underside of the crossbar and into the net – a brilliant goal!

Pell could have had a second minutes later after a Leigh long throw but his strike was blocked.

Fleetwood levelled on 37 minutes when Coyle was judged to have clipped Chiekh Thiam just inside the area and, even though Savin went the right way, Garner’s penalty found the back of the net.

The Cod Army weren’t level for long though as another superb goal put Stanley ahead on 42 minutes.

This time it was Hamilton who got the ball around 30 yards out, ran inside and unleashed a fierce strike with his left foot which rifled into the top corner of the net.

Pell came close to another eye-catching goal just before half-time but his drive from the right of the area was narrowly wide.

Leigh made it three to the Reds on 50 minutes, Pell clipped the ball into the area and Leigh ran onto it and took it first time to beat Billy Crellin.

Scully came close to a fourth – and his first Stanley goal – but Crellin did well to deny his low drive.

Mumbongo, who came on at half-time, also came close on 70 minutes when he got the ball following a surging run from Hamilton but clipped the crossbar.

Leigh also hit the woodwork before Nottingham powered home a header from a Hamilton corner on 86 minutes to complete the scoring.
