REPORT: Burton Albion 4 Stanley 0

Reds suffer third successive League One loss

23 November 2021

Accrington Stanley suffered their third successive League One defeat with a 4-0 loss at the Pirelli Stadium.

Two goals in either half gave Burton the win who, after four league defeats on the trot, moved into the top half of the table.

For Stanley, they are looking over their shoulder as once again they leaked goals, something John Coleman has been furious about this season.

Loan players Joel Mumbongo and Yeboah Amankwah got the nod to start with Tommy Leigh injured and Liam Coyle dropping to the bench.

Stanley had the only chance of the opening 10 minutes with Sean McConville firing straight at keeper Ben Garratt.

McConville had another chance after Ethan Hamilton set him up on the edge of the area but his curling strike was narrowly wide.

Burton pressed with corners and long throws and opened the scoring from a corner on 28 minutes.

The Reds failed to cleared their lines as the ball pinged around the area and it landed for Daniel Jebbison who turned and fired home.

Stanley had a let off on 32 minutes when the ball fell to Ryan Leak unmarked in the six yard box but he blasted well over the bar.

The Brewers had another chance in injury time in the first half when Jonny Smith burst through with only James Trafford to beat but the keeper did well to deny him.

But, in the fourth minute of added time, Smith was put through again and the striker this time stroked the ball.

Coyle came on for Amankwah at half-time but Jebbison had a great chance almost on the goalline in the early stages, but turned and fired over the bar.

However it was three on 48 minutes when a Harry Pell free kick in Stanley’s half went straight to Smith who raced forward and fired past Trafford.

Number four followed two minutes later when Man City keeper Trafford miskicked a back pass and it fell easily for Sheffield United frontman Jebbison to stroke into the empty net.

Stanley strived to get one back, a McConville long range effort was narrowly over the bar.

Mumbongo then had a great chance on 69 minutes when he burst forward and beat Garratt but fired across the goal and wide of the target.

However Burton continued to hunt for more – their best effort a Tom Hamer strike which was pushed out by Trafford while Kane Hemmings had the ball in the net but it was off-side in injury time.

Stanley are now five league games without a win and will be looking to turn it around at Lincoln City on Saturday.
