Reds draw a blank at the Wham Stadium

15 April 2022

Accrington Stanley and Burton Albion battled out a goalless draw at the Wham Stadium although both sides had chances to win it.

In the penultimate home game of the season for the Reds, they found Brewers on loan Manchester United keeper Matej Kovar in top form as Burton chalked up their third 0-0 draw on the bounce.

Toby Savin also had to be at his best in the second half as neither side could find a way through.

Joe Pritchard started his first game since August following his long-term injury struggles while Ross Sykes returned to the Reds defence after his two-game ban.

Stanley began on the front foot, Tommy Leigh dragging an effort wide while, at the other end, Harry Chapman had a shot blocked by Sykes.

The Reds had a great chance on 16 minutes when Ethan Hamilton burst through but Kovar got down well to deny him.

Colby Bishop had a chance a minute later but Kovar was there to prevent a goal and striker Bishop was denied again soon after.

Sean McConville’s low drive was kept out by Kovar while Leigh fizzed a cross across the face of goal but no one was there to capitalise.

In one goalmouth scramble, Jay Rich-Baghuelou tried an overhead kick and Hamilton had a shot blocked as the Reds looked for a breakthrough.

Rich-Baghuelou headed into the arms of Kovar as Stanley continued to create chances with Burotn having rare breaks into the Stanley half.

On one such break, on 42 minutes, Tom Hamer blasted over in a good position.

Burton started the second half pressing the Reds goal without testing Toby Savin.

Winger Pritchard, after putting a number of dangerous balls into the box, came off on 55 minutes replaced by Rosario Longelo.

Albion had a great chance on 63 minutes with a counter attack but Savin did superbly well to keep out Joe Powell’s strike.

A minute later Savin denied Oumar Niasse who was one-on-one with the keeper as Albion looked for the opener.

Stanley were still a threat, Hamilton’s close range blast at goal was blocked and McConville burst through on 75 minutes but once against Kovar denied him.

Jack Nolan's drive was kept out by Kovar in injury time as both side's drew a blank.

Burton virtually secured their place in League One next season with the point - both sides have come a long way since their UniBond League One battles in the late 1990s.
