Accrington Stanley beat Blackpool on penalties in their second Northern Group G game at the Wham Stadium.

The score was 1-1 on 90 minutes with Colby Bishop firing home the equaliser 11 minutes from time.

It went to sudden death and Bishop missed his penalty but Toby Savin pulled off a tremendous save to keep out Grant Ward’s spot kick before Dan Kemp skied the final penalty for the visitors to give the Reds a 4-3 win on spot kicks.

The Reds won their first game against Leeds U21s and remain top of Group G.

Tom Scully started for the Reds for the first time while Dion Charles, suspended for three league games, got the nod up front. Joe Maguire also made his first start of the campaign.

Stanley had the first chance on two minutes when Maguire’s free kick found the head of unmarked Ross Sykes who headed wide – but the offside flag had gone up.

At the other end, Bez Lubala had a go at goal but it was into the arms of Toby Savin.

Pool opened the scoring on 10 minutes when Stanley lost the ball at the back, it eventually came to Keshi Anderson on the edge of the area and he curled the ball into the back of the net.

Both side’s probed without testing either keeper until the 40^th minute when Savin dived low to keep out Ollie Sarkic’s fierce strike.

Zehn Mohammed came on at the break for the Reds and Stanley had a great chance just after the restart when Bishop headed down for Sykes in the area but the defender fired over from a tight angle.

Pool keeper Chris Maxwell had to come out a number of times to collect long balls as the heavy rain made conditions tricky.

John Coleman put on Joe Pritchard and Tariq Ukakwe as they hunted for the equaliser.

It came on 79 minutes when Pritchard evaded his marker on the right wing and played in the perfect cross for Bishop to head home his first goal of the campaign.

Uwakwe had a shot from distance five minutes from time but Maxwell collected it while Pool sub Demetri Mitchell was lively and he rifled a strike at Savin who did well to keep hold of it.

And so to penalties – Bishop’s first spot kick was saved by Maxwell while Jerry Yates made it 1-0 to Pool.

Charles made no mistake with his penalty and Ethan Robson tucked his away to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Sykes blasted his kick home and Savin was unlucky not to save scorer Anderson’s but it went in to give Pool a 3-2 lead.

Pritchard fired home his kick and then Savin did superbly well to deny Ward with the score 3-3.

Scully found the bottom corner with number five and Kemp blasted over for a Reds victory.
