Goaless encounter in Lancashire der

19 December 2020

In-form Accrington Stanley and Blackpool played out a goalless draw at the Wham Stadium in a Lancashire derby.

Blackpool, who had won seven of their previous 10 encounters ahead of the game, came up against Stanley who had lost just once in nine League One matches.

However neither side could break the deadlock in game affected by the wet conditions.

After a cagey opening, Stanley had the first chance on 13 minutes when a Sean McConville corner found ex-Pool defender Michael Nottingham but his header was easy for Chris Maxwell.

They came close again two minutes later when McConville charged through one-on-one with a ball over the top from Nottingham but Pool keeper Maxwell came out and managed to smother the ball to deny the winger a clean shot on goal.

On 26 minutes, Blackpool had their first real chance when Jerry Yates got the ball on the edge of the area after good work by CJ Hamilton on the right but he lashed his strike against the post.

Blackpool had another chance on 38 minutes when Keshi Anderson broke and passed to Gary Madine with Madine’s low strike easy for Chelsea loan keeper Nathan Baxter.

Stanley went straight down the other end and Colby Bishop was inches off connecting with a Joe Pritchard cross which whisked across the face of goal.

It was goalless at the break and Stanley had the first chance after the restart but Matt Butcher’s low free kick was easily collected by Maxwell.

With the rain coming down, the pitch got increasingly slippy making it difficult for either side to play their passing game.

Blackpool had a great chance when Hamilton broke at pace – with Stanley shouting for a foul on Nottingham – and he passed to Yates in the area but Baxter came out to block his close range effort.

Stanley then enjoyed a flurry of chances.

On the hour mark, McConville got the ball again on the edge of the area but, as he lined up to shoot, Pool defender Ollie Turton got back to block his effort.

Nottingham had a header over the bar and Dion Charles was clean through but Maxwell did well to deny him with his legs.

Charles blasted over and, as they upped the pressure, Pritchard curled a strike narrowly wide on 78 minutes.

With seven minutes to go, striker Charles got the ball in the area but blasted his effort across the goal and just wide while Pritchard fired off-target after getting himself into a decent position.

Charles had a strike deflected as the Reds pressed until the end but couldn’t find a way through.
