Wycombe Wanderers 1-1 Stanley

Dion Charles opened the scoring but a second half penalty earns Wycombe a draw

17 September 2019

Accrington Stanley earned a point in a 1-1 draw away at Wycombe Wanderers, with Dion Charles opening the scoring in the first half before Nick Freeman slotted a penalty past Dimitar Evtimov for Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

Stanley started the game well as John Coleman’s side had chances through Charles and Jordan Clark.

Clark continued to cause problems for the Wycombe defence, and it was his cross on 39 minutes that was headed home by Charles to open the scoring.

The hosts came out after the break the stronger team and there were appeals from both the Wycombe players and fans for a penalty on 47 minutes for a handball, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Jerome Opoku was given a yellow card on 51 minutes for a strong challenge, and there were huge appeals for the Fulham loanee to receive a second yellow for a handball on 65 minutes, but the referee gave the defender his final warning, much to the frustration of the Wycomhe players and the home fans.

Ainsworth’s side were awarded a penalty on 71 minutes after the referee judged captain Seamus Conneely to have made a challenge, despite it looking as though the midfielder had won the ball.

Up stepped Freeman and the Wycombe midfielder slotted the ball past Evtimov to draw his side level.

It looked as though Sean McConville, who was returning from suspension, had won it with 15 minutes left to play as he curled an effort towards the far post, but it rebounded off the woodwork and out of play.

The referee then decided to add a further eight minutes on at the end of the second half, but neither side could grab the winning goal ensuring that Coleman’s side return to Accrington with a share of the points.
