Peterborough United 4-0 Stanley

Stanley concede four second half goals after having goal disallowed before the break

23 October 2019

Accrington Stanley conceded four second half goals to suffer a 4-0 away defeat to Peterborough United, with striker Offrande Zanzala having a goal controversially disallowed in the first of 12 minutes added time at the end of the first half.

The game started rapidly with both teams having chances, but the game had to be halted with both Mo Eisa and Colby Bishop having to receive treatment for separate injuries.

Stanley had the first real chance of the game on 26 minutes when Callum Johnson sent the ball into the box and Zanzala managed to get a touch to it and in doing so took it away from Sean McConville who was about to run onto it.

The Reds were then forced into making a change with Joe Maguire replacing the injured Zaine Francis-Angol.

Stanley continued to ask questions of the Peterborough defence and Jordan Clark chased the ball down superbly before playing it to Bishop, but the striker scuffed his shot and the chance was gone.

Five minutes after coming on, Maguire had to be stretchered off after the ball hit him directly in the face, which led to 12 minutes being added on at the end of the first half.

During the first minute of added time, McConville curled a free-kick towards goal which came out to Zanzala and the striker tapped the ball over the line, but the referee then controversially decided to disallow the goal for no clear reason.

The hosts came out after the break looking like the better side and they opened the scoring on 56 minutes when Marcus Maddison raced towards goal before chipping the ball over goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov.

Following the goal, Darren Ferguson's side continued to dominate the game and they added further goals as the half progressed through Ivan Toney, Frankie Kent and Siriki Dembele.

Next up for Stanley is a home clash against Gillingham on Saturday 26th October, 3pm kick-off.
