Shrewsbury Town 0 Stanley 2

Former Shrews Grant and Clark on target for Reds second successive win

11 February 2020

Bobby Grant fired home a stunning goal on his third Stanley debut as the Reds celebrated their second league victory of 2020.

The winger got the nod to start at his former club Shrewsbury and he marked his arrival with a bang, rocketing the ball home from the edge of the box in the 13th minute.

Former Shrew Jordan Clark made the game safe for the Reds in the 70th minute by firing home his seventh goal of the season as the Reds leapfrogged Shrewsbury into 16th place, 13 points clear of the bottom three.

Coleman gave debuts to both January loan signings – Grant and Wolves loan striker Benny Ashley-Seal and they were largely in the charge in the first half.

Clark got the assist for Grant’s goal as the Reds had a dream start and, while they did struggle to test Shrews keeper Joe Murphy, they looked comfortable against a Shrewsbury side who didn’t have a shot on target in the opening half.

Dion Charles was a threat, Ashley-Seal battled hard and Sadou Diallo tried to be creative for the Reds.

For the Shrews, Conor McAleny’s shot was cleared by Ross Sykes while a Jason Cummings header looped over the bar before the break.

The Shrews looked more threatening after the interval with Cummings coming close on 55 minutes, he charged into the area and fired goalwards, with his strike deflected just wide.

The home side forced a succession of corners and Shrews captain Dave Edwards headed wide at the near post.

Ozzy Zanzala came on in the 64th minute, replacing Ashley-Seal, and the striker was able to be influential immediately.

After the Shrews appealed for a penalty at one end, Stanley broke and Zanzala was brought down 20 yards from goal. Joe Maguire took the resulting free kick and found the head of Ross Sykes. His effort was cleared as the ball bounced around the area and Clark pounced for his second in two games.

Dion Charles was unlucky not to add a third for the Reds and Stanley held on for an important and morale-boosting win – when the two sides clashed at the Wham Stadium in August, Coleman’s side squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 but there was no danger of a repeat as Stanley made it two wins in two games.
